A destination for Voyagers

For those who come by way of the sea, the mountain, or the long road south.

Tasmania has a way of making the world feel very large again. Great cliffs disappearing into sea-mist, lonely lighthouses, strange plants clinging to the earth, and the Southern Ocean stretching far beyond them.

And then, eventually home. A little grey cottage beneath an old plane tree. A bath drawn. A bottle uncorked. The fire crackling as evening settles over Hobart.

Arrival at LUMIÈRE

Five minutes from the centre of Hobart, Lumière makes a natural starting point for journeys further afield. The mountain rises behind the city; the Derwent leads towards the valleys and small towns beyond; and in the other direction, the road runs south towards wild coastlines, forests and the Southern Ocean.

Back at the house, guests are welcomed with provisions from some of our favourite Tasmanian makers - freshly baked sourdough, cultured butter, farm eggs, preserves and pressed juice among them - selected according to the season and waiting for the first morning at home.

WITHIN THE HOUSE

Behind its modest grey façade, Lumière unfolds room by room. Colour, old timber, patterned papers and stained glass sit alongside pieces collected over many years, giving the house the character of somewhere that has evolved rather than been assembled.

Three bedrooms accommodate up to six guests, with three bathrooms throughout the house. The attic rooms sit beneath the old roofline, while downstairs, fireplaces anchor the principal rooms and tall nineteenth-century windows look towards the garden and the old plane tree.

There is a certain pleasure in allowing the house to set the pace. Mornings begin slowly; afternoons may end with a bath beneath the stained glass; and when Hobart turns cold, there are fires to light, books to find and a kitchen made for cooking. Lumière was created not simply as somewhere from which to see Tasmania, but as somewhere worth coming home to.

THE KITCHEN

At the heart of Lumière is a traditional English-style kitchen, overlooking the garden through a broad old window. It is a generous working kitchen rather than a decorative one, designed for guests who genuinely enjoy cooking and gathering around food.

The kitchen is fully equipped with quality cookware and chef's knives, an induction cooktop, full steam oven and combination microwave, together with the pieces needed for everything from a quiet supper for two to dinner around the table.

For those who would rather surrender the kitchen for an evening, private dining can also be arranged at Lumière, bringing a more intimate expression of Tasmania's produce to the house.

THE DETAILS

Lumière Lodge accommodates up to six guests across three bedrooms and three bathrooms.

The house is in West Hobart, approximately five minutes from central Hobart, with excellent grocers, butchers, bakeries and neighbourhood favourites close at hand. It is equally well placed for journeys beyond the city.

As an old house, Lumière retains some of the idiosyncrasies that give it its character, including a steep heritage staircase to the attic. We provide detailed information before arrival so that guests can determine whether the house will be comfortable for everyone in their party.

AND THEN, HOME

Perhaps that is the thing we hope guests remember most about Lumière: not simply the places they went, but the feeling of returning.

The mountain disappearing behind cloud. The last light over the Derwent. A long road back towards Hobart. And, somewhere beneath the branches of an old plane tree, a little grey house with glowing windows.
